The Frenchman Coulee, is an active desert climbing venue near the hamlet of Vantage, WA. Near the shores of the Columbia River and the Gorge Concert venue, the coulee attract rock climbers seeking the dry side of the Cascade crest. The columnar basalt provides vertical sport and crack climbing unique to this geology. Apart from being beautiful scenery to look at, the immense gray to orange columns at Frenchman Coulee have attracted both geologists and rock climbers alike. There are nearly 600 set routes in the area, but many climbers estimate the number of routes to be closer to 800.
The routes are 40- to 100-feet high. The stone pillars are lined with cracks that extend from the ground all the way to the top creating perfect climbs to work on your technique. It’s a fun place to camp for a few days and enjoy some desert stone.
